Sirhowy Hill Woodlands

What is the Tree Nursery?

How it started...

Started in 2021 with the support of FIRS, Snowdonia national park, Coed Cymru and Llais y goedwig, the tree nursery was a instigated to supply trees for our woodlands, for new hedgerows, as replacements for the felling of larch as required by Natural Resource Wales under the terms of our felling license and We are also required under the terms of their support package to supply them with seedling trees for other woodlands, open spaces, commumities and for other groups to plant

Sprouting new beginnings

Before we could proceed, we had to clear the site of scrub willow and rush, then to fence it and “a la Charles Dowding” the no dig guru, we carboarded the whole site, thank you Thomas Waste Brynmawr for supplying vast quantities of free cardboard and Howard Withers and his digger for clearing and ditching the site.

Community involvement

Our volunteers then installed the raised beds, filling them with  soil provided by FIRS , also installing the 1000 litre water containers with a prototype rain collection area above them.

We have started collecting seedlimg trees and sowing wychelm, we have also with the help of our dedicated violunteers  planted a couple of hundred trees in our new hedgerow around the top meadow
