Liam Olds, from The Coal Spoil Biodiversity Initiative, has been undertaking surveys of Sirhowy Hill Woodlands. These have been funded by The Woodland Investment Grant (TWIG) scheme, which is being delivered by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in partnership with the Welsh Government’s National Forest for Wales Programme.

Below is a list of the species recorded that are deemed to be of 'conservation importance' due to their Local, Scarce or Rare conservation statuses, or presence on Section 7 of the Environment (Wales) Act 2016.

bee. It is nationally scarce and has declined so much that it is listed as a Section 42 Conservation Priority
Species in Wales,

Liam stated: "Some of these species will have been recorded at the reserve before, but I'm sure there are plenty that haven't. It is really positive that the survey is continuing to find species that are often scarce in Wales/UK, and especially so within Blaenau Gwent."

Wonderful!!! 💚💚💚

Research ongoing for the QR code trail. Some of you lovely people have given me information regarding the firing range shown on this map that now is where Sirhowy Hill Woodlands is. I have 2 big asks:
1. Is this the "Trefil Ranges"? I know there were other ranges by Cefn Golau and beyond Trefil.
2. Please see the text i have drafted from your responses previously, does this sound correct or do i have anything wrong? For the purposes of the QR code trail, i only need information on the range on Sirhowy Woodlands site.
Thank you in advance, Kathryn.

Why would this one be called the Trefil Range? There is another on the hillside north of Tynewydd that they are more likely referring to.

These are ones at Tynewydd
